Personal bio: 

Renzo Carlucci, born in 21/08/1953, civil engineer graduated (bachelor and master) in 1979, is actually Chief Editor in mediaGEO soc coop, with responsibility of scientific dissemination in the field of Cultural Heritage and Geomatics for Archeomatica and GEOmedia magazines. 

With 30 years of experience in in Management and Protection of Cultural Heritage with deep knowledge of Topography, Cartography, Survey, Restoration, Conservation, Civil Design, GIS and good knowledge of international urban planning and restoration practice, specifically in historic sites with experience in site management, he has been project leader of the first Italian Eureka successful proposal (1992) on Cultural Heritage (EUREKA EUROCARE EU 598 REFRAN), finalized to a quick survey of historical- artistic assets. In the same year he started to be technical director of a Consortium finalized to the realization of the “Risk Map of Cultural Heritage in Italy”, a deep project completed in 1996, started again in 2004-2007 for the internet dissemination action and updating about vulnerability of monuments with a georeferenced database update of all Italian monuments registered in the official archives of local government office in charge to (

He has participated in many cultural heritage competition like the Feasibility Study for the Great Egyptian Museum and Gizah Area initiated by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture on January 2002. The competition was under the patronage of the UNESCO and supervised by the UIA. The base for this project was developed with the support of Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With Pisa University and the the General Directorate for Development Cooperation (DGCS) of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs started working in 2000 on the Geographic Information System for the Risk Map in Saqqara, Egypt, georeferencing tombs and realizing new cartography in a supporting programme for the Egypt Environmental Affairs Agency – Technical Co-operation Office for the Environment in the scope of the environmental programme concerning the safeguarding of the cultural heritage, managed by the SCA (Supreme Council for Antiquities) as its operative counterpart. He has been partner manager for many EU projects like the ARCHEOGUIDE IST-1999, project that has first promoted Augmented Reality as new approach for accessing information at cultural heritage sites in a compelling, user-friendly way through the development of a system based on advanced IT including also 3D-visualization, mobile computing, and multi-modal interaction techniques tried out in Ancient Olympia, in Greece ( Following this experience, with the project LIFEPLUS IST- 2001 an augmented reality based innovative revival of life in ancient frescos-painting and creation of immersive narrative spaces was successfully tested in Pompei.

Previous remarkably experience are the Georeferencing historic buildings damaged by earthquake of september 1997 in regions Umbria and Marche for Istituto Centrale di Restauro Italian Ministry of Culture, the Digital acquisition of “Forma Urbis Romae” in 1998 aimed to a GIS system. The Municipality of Rome Superintendence to Cultural Heritage, the EU project ARCHAEOLOGIS, a realization of an Archaeological Geographic Information System in the Mediterranean Area in 1996.

In the last years involved as Senior Management Consultant for the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs - General Direction for Development Cooperation, in middle east area countries as:

- Iraq, charged by Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for the assistance to the local authorities for the realization of  a Master Plan in UR and generally to assit in Archaeology and Tourism management of the South Iraq.
- Syria for the Project Management Unit designed jointly by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Directorate General of Antiquities and Museum of Syria for the project “Renovation and Reorganization of the National Museum of Damascus and Rehabilitation of the Citadel of Damascus” in the framework of a Development Cooperation project with tendering procedures, contracting management, mid-term review and final control. 2002-2011

- Ethiopia for LOTTI Engineering spa, as Training Coordinator in the Ethio-Italian project "SRDPO Strengthening Regional Development Planning in Oromia" addressed to 35 officials of the Department of Planning and Regional Statistical Information Office and the Department of Finance and Economic Development (BoFED). Project financed by Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs - General Direction for Development Cooperation. 2009-2011

He has a long academic activity in teaching Topography and Geomatics since 1982 years as a part-time professor at the Universities of Roma “La Sapienza”, Roma TRE and L’Aquila. He has also acted as lecturer in ICCROM in the courses Heritage at Risk and complemented the academic activity with research in the filed of geomatics for cultural heritage, having participated in many research projects as the Photogrammetric survey of the Colosseo in Rome, financed by “La Sapienza” University, or HORUS, financed by ESA (European Space Agency) and WHERE, financed by ASI (Italian Space Agency) for the satellite remote sensing of archaeological sites.

He is author of more than 50 publications in the field of geomatics and cultural heritage.
